The “Bund” refers to the nearly 2-kilometer-long Western Huangpu riverside area stretching from Eastern Yan’an Road to Waibaidu Bridge. As a riverside avenue where modern Chinese buildings gather and financial headquarters cluster, the bund enjoys the reputation of the “World’s Architecture Exposition” and the “Eastern Wall Street“.
A living witness of the modern history of Shanghai, the bund is the birthplace of the first foreign firm, the first bank, the first customs office, the first embassy, the first foreign newspaper and the first park.
At the beginning of the 1990s, without diminishing the features of the well-preserved Bund, Shanghai municipal government blew a breath of the age to the Bund by building riverbank sightseeing platform based on the ingenious use of flood protection facilities and different styled buildings furnished with panoramic view lights, like Shanghai Monument to People’s Heroes, the Bund history museum and the Chen Yi Square (Chen Yi was a Chinese communist military commander and the 2nd mayor of Shanghai). It attracts about more than 100,000 tourists daily. And it is awarded as one of Shanghai’s “Top 10 Windows”, ”Top 10 Scenic Spots” and “Top 10 Night Sight” for several times.
In 2009, the Shanghai government launched another round of renovation of the Bund, striving to create a classical riverbank scenic spot and public activity center. On March 28, 2010, the Bund re-opened to the public. After renovation, the bund scenic spot includes the public area enclosed by the western bank of Huangpu River in the east, the pavements in the west of East Zhongshan No.1 and No.2 Roads in the west, the pavement in the north of Dongmen Road in the south, and the southern bank of Suzhou Creek in the north. The Bund sightseeing platform has been extended westward and stretched southward. Four public activity places have been built or extended (namely, the Huangpu Park, the Chen Yi Square, the Bund Financial Square and the Bund Signal Tower Square). The Bund Scenic Spot has presented to the world a refreshing look.
