Located at the common border of Shanghai City, Jiangsu Province and Zhejiang Province, the ancient town called Zhujiajiao has stood for a thousand years at the picturesque Dianshan lakeside. As early as over 1,700 years ago when China was in the Three Kingdoms Period, villages had been formed in the area. In the town, thousands of antique buildings made in Ming and Qing Dynasties overlook the creeks; 9 old streets stretch in parallel with the creek routes; 36 ancient bridges preserve their archaic elegance. As the best-preserved town of historical and cultural integrity in Shanghai, it is deemed as the “Origin of Shanghai”. The famous North Street, also known as “One-Line Street”, is the most completely preserved street featuring buildings dating back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties in Shanghai suburbs. Fangsheng Bridge is the largest five-arch stone bridge in the southern area of Yangtze River.
The town is not only abundant in tourism resources, but also known for its entertainment facilities home and abroad. The scenic area of the ancient town ranks as a 4A tourist spot. With the Shanghai Water Sports Stadium, Oriental Land (a park catering for group activities), Shanghai Sunisland International Club and Shanghai International Golf Country Club, the town serves as a recreational tourism base combining the functions of business, holiday and leisure activity.
The Town of Zhujiajiao attracts tourists from all over the world. In 2001, the tourist zone successfully received the honorable guests attending APEC Conference in China. Since 2006, the town has been successively conferred the honors like “Top 50 Chinese Scenic Areas worth visiting for Foreign Tourists”, “National Urban Construction Demo Town”, “National Charming Town”, “National Civilized Town”, “National Historic and Cultural Town” and “National Garden Town”.
