Located on the People’s Square in Shanghai, the Shanghai Grand Theatre is designed by Arte Chapentier, a French architectural designing company. Just like a crystal palace created with strings of notes, it has cost a total investment of 1.2 billion Renminbi yuan. Covering a land area of 2.1 hectares, the theatre with a 70,000-square-meter constructed space rises 40 meters high and is divided into three parts: a grand theatre, a medium-sized theatre, and a mini theatre.

Keeping to its purpose of first-rate art works, first-rate art experiences, and first-rate art education, and driving at the goal of becoming an international, artistic and creative establishment, the theatre never brings onto its stage any programs but masterpieces performed by celebrated artists and reputed art troupes, or flinches from its endeavours to stand out as the benchmark of Chinese theatres, the calling card of urban cultures, and the center of cultural creations. Since August 27, 1998 when it officially raised its curtain, the theatre has hosted as many as 7,000 performances, entertaining about 10 million theatre-goers. It has now become a platform displaying world-level art works, facilitating international art exchanges, and promoting art education of a welfare character.

SGT is ISO 9001:2008 certified, and has been awarded many prestigious honors, such as "Organization with Social Responsibility"(1999~2010), "National Demonstration Base for Culture Industry"(2004), "National Advanced Cultural Organization"(2005), "Best Operated Theatre in China- Gold Prize"(2006) and " Shanghai International Cultural Exchange Base "(2008). SGT joined the Association of Asia Pacific Performing Arts Centers (AAPPAC) in 2002 and became the executive member of AAPPAC.
