——French musical stars celebrate Culture Square's birthday with Gala Concert
Six well-known French musical singers performed at the Shanghai Culture Square's 15th anniversary gala.
The concert featured more than 30 numbers from ten classic French musicals – from the moving arias of "Les Misérables" and the fateful songs of "Notre-Dame de Paris" to the burning passion of "Roméo et Juliette" and the unrestrained rhapsody of "Mozart l'Opéra Rock," plus stage gems such as "Starmania," "Molière," "Le Roi Soleil," and "Don Juan."
The star-studded lineup brought together old and new friends. Hélène Ségara was the "original" Esmeralda in the 1998 production of "Notre-Dame de Paris." Born in southern France and of mixed heritage, she quickly rose to fame in France with her unique Gypsy charm.
Chinese audiences also fondly remembered two other cast members of "Notre-Dame de Paris": Elhaida Dani first came to Shanghai in 2019, playing Esmeralda; and Angelo Del Vecchio, who played Quasimodo alongside her, also took part in the gala concert.
Gian Marco Schiaretti was also in Shanghai. He had played the libertine Don Juan and the debonair rogue Casanova.
The lineup also included veteran singer Robert Marien, who had played Archdeacon Frollo in "Notre-Dame de Paris." Abi Bernadoth had appeared the previous year at Culture Square as the Prince de Conti in "Molière." The French musical was scheduled to return in December as Culture Square's year-end show.
Over the previous 15 years, Shanghai Culture Square had presented more than 890 stage productions from home and abroad in over 3,500 performances, and had welcomed a cumulative audience of more than 4.4 million.
