Disney character LinaBell plays Shanghai opera with a young actress. Shanghai Disney Resort has emerged as a premier cultural tourism destination, drawing an increasing number of visitors since its opening by blending Disney storytelling with Chinese cultural elements, according to a report released by the China center for international economic exchanges on Wednesday.
The report said that the resort has welcomed over 100 million visitors since opening, marking remarkable success with its "Authentically Disney, Distinctly Chinese" approach. This strategy has produced innovations, including the globally popular character LinaBell and the world's first Zootopia-themed land.

A research report examines the founding vision of Shanghai Disney Resort — "Authentically Disney, Distinctly Chinese" — and the role it has played in shaping the resort's identity and growth.
"Since the day it all began at Shanghai Disney Resort, we have been dedicated to creating a place where the magic of Disney blends with the profound beauty of Chinese culture, resonating with guests and fans from near and far," Andrew Bolstein, president and general manager of Shanghai Disney Resort, said.
The resort functions as a significant economic engine, directly employing about 15,000 cast members, with each direct job estimated to support six to seven additional jobs across related industries. Its community impact extends to hospital play spaces, wish-granting programs for critically ill children, and comprehensive accessibility services, according to the report.
"As Shanghai Disney Resort marks its tenth anniversary this year, this study provides a record of a significant journey in cross-cultural collaboration," Pan Feng, council member at China center for international economic exchanges and president of Europe-China economic cooperation and development council, said.

"The resort's consistent adherence to its guiding principle offers a compelling blueprint for how international brands can successfully integrate into the Chinese market."
As Shanghai Disney Resort celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2026, it has announced expansion plans including a new Spider-Man themed land, additional themed hotels, and attraction upgrades.
"We hope this report can serve as a practical reference for advancing cultural tourism development and sustainable community engagement in the years ahead," Bolstein added.
