7月,上海上市公司加大股票回购和股权收购力度   2026-08-04

Shanghai-listed companies unveiled a record number of share buyback and major shareholder stake increase plans in July as market volatility intensified, underscoring growing confidence among listed firms and industrial investors despite weaker equity markets.

A total of 89 companies listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange announced new share repurchase plans and 67 disclosed shareholder stake increase plans last month, with the combined number hitting the highest monthly total so far this year. The combined upper limit of the planned buybacks reached nearly CNY20.4 billion (USD2.8 billion), while the maximum planned stake increases totaled almost CNY13.7 billion.

According to public data, the number of new buyback plans in July exceeded the total for the entire second quarter, while new stake increase plans were nearly equal to the second-quarter total. The programs were disclosed as the SSE Composite Index fell 6.4 percent in July to close at 3,832.26 points on July 31. Over the same period, the Shenzhen Component Index slipped 16.2 percent to 13,578.93 points, while the ChiNext Index declined 23 percent to 3,343.96 points.

Market participants said the wave of buybacks and stake increases reflects not only listed companies' efforts to cushion market volatility but also long-term confidence in corporate value. They noted that industrial capital, including private companies, centrally administered state-owned enterprises, and other state-owned firms, played the leading role in deploying capital to support share prices.

The July buyback plans covered a range of purposes, including equity incentive schemes, employee stock ownership plans, and market value maintenance. In particular, the popularity of buybacks for share cancellation and defensive buybacks continued to rise, with 16 and 32 new plans, respectively. Together, they accounted for more than half of all new buyback plans announced during the month.

Implementation Picks Up Pace

Companies also accelerated implementation, with many launching their first repurchases immediately after announcing their plans. Some completed their buyback programs within just a few trading days.

Preliminary statistics show that 30 of the 60 SSE main board companies announcing buybacks in July carried out their first repurchase shortly afterward. Some companies completed buybacks within days despite originally planning to finish them over several months.

For example, Olympic Circuit Technology announced on July 19 that it would repurchase between CNY200 million and CNY300 million (USD29.6 million to USD44.4 million) of shares for equity incentives or employee stock ownership plans. The printed circuit board manufacturer conducted its first buyback worth CNY125 million on July 29. It announced on July 31 that, as of July 30, it had completed share repurchases totaling CNY296 million, finishing the program in just two trading days.

Industry insiders said the rapid execution of buybacks and stake increases demonstrates companies' willingness to back their long-term value with capital while helping stabilize market sentiment.
