Pudong packed with fun summer exhibitions

THE summer holiday may be almost over, but there are still plenty of family-friendly exhibitions in the Pudong New Area. Here are some of the season’s highlights at the area’s museums and venues.

From August 8 to October 11, the Shanghai Himalayas Museum will host an exhibition entitled “Architecture for Dogs.”

This whimsical exhibit is curated by famed Japanese designer and MUJI art director Kenya Hara. On view will be 14 doghouses created by some of the world’s top designers and architectural firms, including Shigeru Ban, Ma Yansong and Altelier Bow-Wow.

Launched in 2012, this exhibition has toured the world and is now returning to the Shanghai Himalayas Museum for the sixth time.

“This exhibition is not merely about architecture for animals or building houses for dogs. Through this opportunity to re-observe the living environment of dogs, hopefully we can see our own surroundings, and ourselves, in a new way,” Hara tells Shanghai Daily.

Visitors can also bring their dogs to play in a specially-designed “puppy park” located outside of the main display area.

In addition to this exhibition, the museum is offering art lessons for children between seven and 12 years-of-age. But rather than drilling basic skills such as line drawing or sketching, the museum’s teachers hope to foster an interest in art and culture among children. Brainstorming is also used to develop storylines and ideas, which are then painted by the students.

“Capturing the same subject or merely copying is very boring. We want the children to gain knowledge while they are painting and to have their own thoughts about their works,” Wendy Zheng, a project assistant with the museum’s education department, tells Shanghai Daily.

The Shanghai Science and Technology Museum is always on the can’t-miss list during the summer holiday.

This summer the museum is hosting a special exhibition entitled “See the World Through Your Eyes.”

In the exhibit’s Mysterious Vision section, visitors can learn more about the structure and function of the human eye. They can also observe the various tools — such as telescopes and endoscopes — which humans use to transcend the limits of their natural vision.

Meanwhile, in the Visible Sound area, visitors can find science-themed shows and DIY activities designed to promote scientific thinking.

For those ready to brave Shanghai’s summer heat, one cute cartoon event in Pudong is sure to delight children of all ages.

The beloved Minions from the “Despicable Me” film series have descended on the Oriental Pearl TV Tower for an exhibition entitled “Bello China 2015.” The partially-outdoor exhibition covers an area of 1,200-square-meters and features Minion-themed games, foods, merchandise and more.
