Shanghai’s private supplementary medical insurance Huhuibao has handled CNY750 million (USD111 million) in compensation during its first year, effectively lightening the burden of medical expenses on residents.

Huhuibao has accepted 216,800 insurance claims from July 1, 2021, to July 20, 2022, closing 212,600 of them, the budget supplementary medical insurance cover for Shanghai residents announced today. The highest single compensation amounted to CNY587,100 (USD86,890).

Among the beneficiaries, the youngest was only one year old, while the oldest was 104 years old, according to Huhuibao. The proportion of those over 65 years old was 45.6 percent.

Under the guidance of the Shanghai Municipal Medical Insurance Bureau, Huhuibao, underwritten by China Pacific Insurance and other eight insurance companies, was launched in April last year. The number of insured people in the first year was 7.4 million, generating a total premium of CNY850 million, based on the single premium of CNY115 (USD17).

Shanghai residents can insure themselves between May 25 and July 31 for this year’s Huhuibao. The single premium has risen to CNY129, and the number of insured people nearly reached six million as of this morning, according to The Paper.

Huhuibao is an inclusive insurance program accessible to the 19 million residents participating in Shanghai’s primary medical insurance. There is no requirement for age, occupation, or health status.

This year’s Huhuibao covers cancer immunotherapy CAR-T and 15 overseas special drugs in addition to last year’s version, according to the information previously published by Huhuibao’s official agency. The scope of domestic special drug insurance has also been expanded to 25 kinds from 21.

According to a report jointly released by MediTrust Health and China Life Reinsurance, 27 provincial-level regions in China launched more than 200 inclusive insurance products, with 140 million people insured, and a total premium of over CNY14 billion (USD2.1 billion) as of the end of last year.
