China's C919 jet completes all test flights before getting airworthiness certificate
Jiemian News learned from an executive from COMAC that this means that C919 has wrapped up the test flights task before getting the certification. A COMAC insider told Jiemian, “The test flights have been completed, which means the airworthiness certificate will be issued soon. We learn that C919 is expected to obtain the airworthiness certificate by the end of September.”
On July 19, the six test C919 jets successfully completed all the test flight tasks. The joint command at Yanliang Airbase held a celebration ceremony at Weinan Airport in Shaanxi Province.
It is reported that the six C919 jets have been tested and certified across different subjects in Shanghai (Pudong), Shaanxi (Yanliang), Jiangxi (Nanchang), Shandong (Dongying), Inner Mongolia (Xilinhot), Xinjiang (Turpan), and Gansu (Dunhuang).
The meeting highlighted that the six test C919 jets have completed all the test flight tasks, marking that the certification of C919 has entered the final stage.
The C919, China’s first self-developed trunk jetliner, is fitted with 158-168 seats with a range of 4,075-5,555 kilometers. To date, COMAC has received 815 orders for the C919 from 28 customers worldwide.
2022 is a critical year for C919 in terms of airworthiness certificate and delivery.
On January 19 2022, Wu Yongliang, deputy general manager and chief accountant of COMAC, publicly stated that C919 is currently in the stage of obtaining airworthiness certificate and is expected to be delivered in 2022. “The specific delivery date is pending until the certification is obtained.”
As early as December 2016, the first C919 jet was delivered to the flight test center. On May 5, 2017, the jet conducted a successful maiden flight in Shanghai. In November 2020, the Shanghai Aircraft Airworthiness Certification Center of Civil Aviation Administration of China issued the first Type Inspection Authorization (TIA) to C919, marking the jet has entered the CAAC-authorized test flight stage.
The Type Certificate (TC) can only be obtained if the test flights are successfully approved by the CAAC, and the TC is the key premise for obtaining airworthiness certificate and starting delivery.
As the unit responsible issuing airworthiness certificate for C919, the Shanghai Aircraft Airworthiness Certification Center issued a document at the end of June, saying that the airworthiness certification is the first link in the entire civil aviation safety chain, and it is one of the most technical fields of civil aviation. Airworthiness should be demonstrated in the procedures of “design, manufacturing, verification, and certification after test flights.”
On July 1, according to a post on the WeChat of the Shanghai Aircraft Airworthiness Certification Center, at the celebration of the 101st anniversary of the founding of the CPC held by the center’s committee, Secretary Zhang Xiangxin briefly explained the basic situations of the development of C919, and mentioned the four aspects that could impact the certification efficiency on C919, including the mismatch between verification resources and current tasks, the need to improve inter-professional coordination capabilities, the urgent need to solve key and difficult technical issues, and the need to strengthen the “five integrations.”
