Bilibili World, the three-day annual show for gaming and anime fans, ended last Sunday after hosting 700 exhibitors that included Intel, Lenovo and Nvidia and drew 300,000 visitors. The focus this year was on cutting-edge technology for gamers and artificial intelligence creators.

The event filled eight halls of the National Exhibition and Convention Center.

In Hall 3, Nvidia held an on-site flash sale for its limited-edition graphics cards: the RTX 5070, priced at 4,599 yuan (US$639), and the RTX 5080 Founders Edition, priced at 8,299 yuan. It was the first time at the event that Nvidia conducted direct sales to fans, who formed long lines to buy them.

Among them was Hei Tu, a Shanghai Jiao Tong University post-graduate student dressed in character attire from a miHoYo game. He purchased an RTX 5080 FE to upgrade from his current card, explaining that he wanted to enhance the gaming experience of Helldivers II and to support his local studies in computer vision research.

Nvidia, which recently became the world's first US$4-trillion market-cap company, exhibited its ecosystem at the show, featuring 50 high-performance RTX computers from brands such as Asus, MSI and Honor. Visitors were invited to try China-developed games like Marvel Rivals and Wuthering Waves, all enabled with DLSS 4 multi-frame generation (MFG), a technology used by more than 125 games.

"Shanghai Summer" Event Fuels Consumption

Companies at the show aimed their pitches at students, both as games fans and as potential buyers of electronic devices. Discounts in the thousands of yuan were offered, leveraging the nation's subsidies for trading in old products for new. The trade-in policy, implemented to spur consumer spending, generated 1.1 trillion yuan in sales in the first five months of this year, according to the Ministry of Commerce.

Bilibili World was a boon to Shanghai's tourism, drawing many out-of-town visitors.

Xiao Xu and two friends traveled from Suzhou in neighboring Jiangsu Province, for the three-day event. He said he spent 8,299 yuan (US$1,153) Nvidia graphics card and purchased other related gaming merchandize.

"I was lucky to book a hotel a month in advance," he said. "Prices rocketed closer to the event and room availability became limited."

Indeed, Trip.com, China's largest online tourism platform, said hotel prices tripled in a week and were 26 percent higher than during the show a year earlier.

Companies offer summer discounts for students in the BW booths, besides national trade-in subsidy.

Bilibili World is part of the "Shanghai Summer" campaign, which began this month and is designed to make the city more welcoming to tourists. It will conclude its program of concerts, sports tournaments and cultural festivals in October.

Running through October, the campaign includes concerts, sports tournaments, cultural festivals and brand activations across districts and commercial hubs. Key events include BW 2025 and ChinaJoy, Asia's largest gaming fair, opening next month.
