Shanghai-Nanjing industrial corridor anchored by Putuo

Putuo District in western Shanghai has emerged as a key link in the Shanghai-Nanjing Industrial Innovation Belt.
The six-day CIIE, kicking off on November 5, is not only a global platform for trade and investment but also a catalyst for deepening innovation and industrial collaboration between Shanghai and major cities along the corridor, including Nanjing, Wuxi, Changzhou, Suzhou, Nantong, Yangzhou, Zhenjiang, and Taizhou, as the region works to strengthen its role as a leading hub for innovation.
The Shanghai-Nanjing Industrial Innovation Belt is one of China's most active economic regions. In 2024, the area's total GDP reached 15.9 trillion yuan (US$2.2 trillion), accounting for about 12 percent of the national economy.
The belt connects advanced manufacturing, research, and innovation clusters across nine cities and plays a key role in the Yangtze River Delta region's integrated development.
Putuo District in western Shanghai has emerged as a key link in this regional chain. Often described as the city's "western gateway," Putuo is working to align industries, talent, and resources along the innovation belt.
During this year's CIIE, the district is taking concrete steps to strengthen cooperation and attract investment along the corridor.
By October 27, 533 organizations from Putuo had registered as professional visitors for the expo, involving nearly 4,000 participants – already more than last year's total.
Thirty-one companies from the district are exhibiting across five main sections: medical devices, technical equipment, consumer goods, services, and innovation incubation.
Global and domestic firms such as Schneider Electric, Metro, and Fosun Pharma are among the participants, with 13 setting up their own booths to showcase technologies and products.
Suzhou Creek riverside area in Putuo District.Putuo is also hosting a series of related events during the expo.
On November 6, the district released the 2025 White Paper on the Foreign Investment Environment of the Shanghai-Nanjing Industrial Innovation Belt.
The next day, November 7, it will co-host the 2025 Shanghai International Mining Industry Exchange Conference with the Shanghai Nonferrous Metals Industry Association.
The conference aims to connect global and Chinese mining companies and promote investment and trade cooperation.
On November 8, the Putuo Investment Promotion Conference will take place at the "We Shine Together" Roadshow Hall, featuring introductions to the district's business environment, new project signings, and cooperation agreements with international and domestic enterprises.
During the CIIE, a delegation led by the mayor of Gerace, Italy, will also meet with Putuo officials to discuss cooperation in manufacturing and innovation.
Ahead of the CIIE, the Shanghai-Nanjing Collaborative Innovation Center officially opened on October 26 at the T Center in Putuo.
The facility near the G2 and G42 expressways serves as a gateway to the innovation belt and a base for cooperation among cities along the route.
The center combines exhibition, service, and collaboration functions. It presents results from joint research projects and cooperation cases among the cities. It brings together laboratories, research institutes, and leading enterprises to share innovation resources and industrial data
It also supports services in talent development, financing, and government coordination, and helps companies expand overseas.
To facilitate cross-regional collaboration, Putuo has launched an online platform called the Innovation Market.
The platform connects industrial policies, technology needs, and innovation resources from all participating cities.
It serves as a year-round digital marketplace for resource sharing, helping organizations match supply and demand continuously.
A network of technology managers from research institutes and enterprises has also been established to help guide the process from research matching to product commercialization.
The mechanism aims to turn scientific achievements into market-ready products and promote collaboration across sectors.
The belt's cooperation system is built on extensive groundwork. Since early this year, cities along the route have developed three detailed lists for resources, needs, and cooperation projects.
So far, they have identified 311 key resources such as laboratories and technology centers, defined 298 industrial and innovation needs, and listed 196 cross-regional cooperation projects. These serve as the foundation for more efficient collaboration.
Putuo's participation in the CIIE and the launch of the new cooperation center show how Shanghai's western district is becoming a key connector for the Shanghai-Nanjing Industrial Innovation Belt, the Putuo government said.
By linking technology, talent, capital, and data, the district is helping to create a smoother flow of innovation and investment across the region.
As the CIIE continues, Putuo's initiatives highlight how local governments in China are using the expo to promote deeper cooperation along major industrial corridors, according to the district government.
The district's efforts are not just about exhibitions or trade – they represent a step toward building an integrated, innovation-driven economy that supports the broader goals of the Yangtze River Delta's regional development, it added.
