Registration for Shanghai citizen night school opens on March 7
Shanghai Citizen Night School program is gearing up for the spring semester, with registration opening at 10am on March 7. Classes are scheduled to commence in early April.
To cater to growing demand, both the night and day school initiatives are undergoing major expansions this spring. The night school will offer a record 2,495 courses across 650 locations, representing a 13% increase in venues and a 33% rise in the number of courses compared to previous terms.
This season's curriculum boasts remarkable diversity. In Jing'an District, the city's first hospital-based teaching site has been established at the Shanghai Tenth People's Hospital (Zhajiang Road Branch), which will offer courses in traditional Chinese medicine intangible cultural heritage. The first evening school site in a secondary school, Chaoyang Middle School, will feature "intangible cultural heritage stick-beating." A new partnership with a Starbucks store on West Nanjing Road will introduce a "Coffee Experience Course," while in Putuo District, a home furnishing store, Red Star Macalline, will host Go (weichi) classes.

Three dedicated sites will also offer customized courses for expatriates, including "Intangible Cultural Heritage Handicrafts" and a "BJJ for Expats" class in Huacao, Minhang District; a "Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Basics" course in Putuo; and an "International Chinese Language Course" at the Changning Folk Culture Center to help foreign residents integrate into the local community.

Building on the success of its pilot run last autumn, the Shanghai Citizen Day School is scaling up dramatically. From an initial 69 trial locations, it will now operate out of 186 sites – a 77% increase – offering 790 courses, a 69% surge in availability. Last term, all courses in the ten pilot districts were fully booked, with 30 classes filling up within a minute, highlighting the strong public appetite for daytime learning options.
The day school is expanding its footprint into new urban spaces, including business parks, commercial districts, and public parks. Innovations this term include its first hospital site at the Shuguang Hospital affiliated with Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Huangpu District, focusing on common health issues and wellness for middle-aged and elderly residents. A large sports complex in Putuo will offer table tennis, badminton, and even a dryland curling course to spark interest in winter sports.

Alongside these, the Weekend Art Education Program continues to refine its offerings, deepening its focus on parent-child art education and providing diverse courses for young people.
Registration will open in phases at 10:00 AM on designated days: March 3 for the Weekend Art Education Program, March 7 for the Evening School, and March 8 for the Day School. Registration for the evening school will also be available through the "Suishenban" city service app.
