Shanghai to host latest carbon neutrality expo
The 2026 Shanghai International Carbon Neutrality Expo in Technologies, Products and Achievements will be held from June 10 to 12, the municipal government announced during a press briefing on Wednesday.
Now in its fourth edition, the expo will cover an area of 40,000 square meters with almost 300 enterprises attending.
The exhibition will focus on the themes of energy transition, low-carbon transportation, energy efficiency enhancement, circular economy, low-carbon services and practical exploration.
It will also demonstrate a series of forward-looking and innovative products and technologies related to green fuels, energy-saving equipment and biomass materials.
This year's expo will inaugurate a guest province of honor, with the Inner Mongolia autonomous region serving as the first of its kind. The province will showcase its best practices in green power trading and clean energy development.
Currently, Shanghai is accelerating the project under which green electricity generated in Inner Mongolia is transmitted to Shanghai. One core part of the project received approval from the National Development and Reform Commission in January and is scheduled to officially break ground in the second half of the year. The entire project is expected to go operational by 2030, delivering over 40 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually to Shanghai, accounting for approximately one sixth of the city's total electricity consumption in 2030.
While China is promoting the construction of zero-carbon industrial parks, a number of benchmark cases currently built in the country will be showcased at the upcoming expo.
The application of digital and intelligent tools to green development is another highlight of this year's expo. This will include the integration of disruptive technologies such as controlled nuclear fusion, as well as cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence, blockchain, big data and digital twins.
While facilitating companies' outbound reaches has served as one major purpose of this exhibition, this year's edition will bring together leading companies in consumer goods, intelligent manufacturing, retail and services to exchange their thoughts and experiences regarding meteorological early warning support, carbon data credibility, low-carbon technology innovation and industrial rule coordination.
During the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) period, Shanghai had seen sustained declines in energy consumption and carbon emission intensity per unit area, Zhu Minglin, deputy director of Shanghai Municipal Development & Reform Commission said on Wednesday.
The city has installed over 6 million kilowatts of photovoltaic capacity. Industrial enterprises with a minimum annual sales revenue of 20 million yuan ($2.9 million) each have seen their energy consumption per unit of value-added reduced by a cumulative 12.4 percent. Over 400 million square meters of green buildings have been erected. More than 1.9 million new energy vehicles have been running in the city, maintaining a leading position nationwide, according to Zhu.
Shanghai is now advancing a large-scale offshore wind power base in the state-managed sea areas east of Chongming Island in the eastern part of the city. This will help to develop local renewable energy sources in Shanghai, said Zhu.
