Latest 'See You in Shanghai!' line-up announced

Ma Chencheng, president of SMG Live, speaks at the launch ceremony of "See You in Shanghai!" 2026 Performance Season on May 19.

Shanghai Media Group (SMG) unveiled the "See You in Shanghai!" 2026 Performance Season on Tuesday, announcing a landmark lineup that includes the global premiere of the musical Immersive Arcane, the farewell season of The Phantom of the Opera, and the China premiere of the Tony Award-winning Moulin Rouge! The Musical.

SMG launched the "See You in Shanghai!" campaign last year to boost tourism.

Kicking off the season's heavyweight roster is Immersive Arcane, the world's first stage adaptation of the animated series Arcane: League of Legends. Since its opening in March, the show has drawn thousands of spectators nationwide, attracting gamers and animation fans from all over the world.

Recognized as a new benchmark for Shanghai's performing arts innovation, Immersive Arcane is produced by Tencent Video and Tencent Games, and co-produced by SMG Live, Riot Games, Wajijiwa Entertainment, Shanghai Oriental Pearl (Group) Co, and the renowned London-based immersive theater company Punchdrunk — creators of Sleep No More, which has been running in Shanghai for over a decade.

From Sept 29 to Dec 6, The Phantom of the Opera will hold its 40th Anniversary Shanghai Farewell Season at the Shanghai Grand Theatre. The Shanghai run will feature West End star Ramin Karimloo as the leading role, alongside Samuel Wyn-Morris, who earned acclaim during the 2025 international tour.

SMG also announced "Phantom China Project 2.0" to develop an immersive theater experience of the Phantom of the Opera in Shanghai.

Making its highly anticipated China debut, Moulin Rouge! The Musical — based on Baz Luhrmann's classic film and winner of 10 Tony Awards — will run from Dec 15 to Jan 3, 2027, at the BOCOM New Bund 31 Performing Arts Center.

The 2026 season will also sustain long-running residencies, including the dance theater productions The Eternal Wave and The Crested Ibis, the immersive theater experience Sleep No More, and the multimedia acrobatic show ERA 2, forming a robust ecological matrix for the city's performing arts market.

SMG Live introduced a new membership project, offering hotel and travel subsidies if a show is temporarily canceled. Furthermore, SMG Live signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Jinjiang Hotels to launch "See You in Shanghai, See You in Jinjiang" themed afternoon teas and rooms, integrating cultural IP with the hospitality industry.

"Driven by Shanghai's rich urban heritage and complete industrial infrastructure, we continue to integrate resources to welcome audiences from across China and the globe," said Ma Chencheng, president of SMG Live.

In 2025, the "See You in Shanghai!" brand saw five major residency projects stage nearly 1,000 shows with over 240 million yuan ($35.28 million) in box office revenue, driving nearly 1 billion yuan in cultural and tourism consumption, with nearly 60 percent of the audience traveling from outside Shanghai, according to Wang Jian'er, vice-president of SMG.
