Zeiss eyes China as engine for growth, dynamism

With China being its largest single market worldwide and one of its most dynamic growth engines, German optics giant Zeiss Group will continue to deepen its presence in the country and build a win-win ecosystem with local partners, said its China head.

Martin Fischer, president and CEO of Zeiss Greater China, said during a recent forum in Shanghai:"As a technology leader, we know China is where the future is being built in real time — and where the dialogue between technology and industry truly shapes the world. That is why we are celebrating Zeiss' 180th anniversary here today: not only to honor our legacy, but even more to look ahead to the next 180 years."

He noted that for China, as for Zeiss, 2026 is a special year, as it marks the start of the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30). "Zeiss' capabilities resonate strongly with China's strategy of high-quality development. We are aligned in industrial ambition, in innovation intensity, and in long-term thinking."

Zeiss first entered China in 1957. At its innovation, and research and development centers in Shanghai, Suzhou in Jiangsu province, and Guangzhou in Guangdong province, it is advancing both products and processes, with solutions serving customers worldwide.

"Our manufacturing sites are widely recognized for both smart production and sustainability — our Guangzhou manufacturing site, for example, became the world's first optical lens factory to join the Global Lighthouse Network earlier this year," Fischer said.

According to market research firm Market Monitor, in 2025, the global optics market reached 107.5 billion yuan ($15.8 billion), with China accounting for 21.45 billion yuan.

"China offers one of the world's most comprehensive supply chains, a stable and attractive business environment, and — crucially — an openness to new technologies. I have personally witnessed the rapid rise and iteration of artificial intelligence in China, which has inspired us and accelerated our own transformation. In our new five-year strategy, AI-powered digital transformation and data intelligence are core themes: we are embedding them into our solutions and processes to help customers move faster, smarter and more sustainably," Fischer said.

Zhu Guangyao, China's former vice-minister of finance, said that the source of technological innovation is the core of future industrial competition, which requires the joint efforts of enterprises, universities and research institutes. He expects that multinational corporations will continue to be deep partners for China's high-quality development.

"Currently, the world is facing severe challenges. We need global cooperation to promote the steady growth of the world economy. China is building a high-level open economy, and we welcome Zeiss and all foreign enterprises to continue expanding their investments in China," he said.

Zeiss has established two hubs in the Yangtze River Delta and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, focusing on high-end equipment and eye health. Its new headquarters in China is now under construction in Shanghai, marking the start of its next chapter of localization. It will serve as an open platform for innovation.
