Portuguese contemporary design shines in Shanghai
Dozens of Portuguese brands are showcasing the beauty of contemporary design at CIMEN Mall in the heart of Shanghai’s Xuhui District, in an exhibition titled “Not a Love Story.”
Co-organized by AICEP, Portugal’s trade and investment agency, the exhibition places centuries-old craftsmanship within a poetic fracture of reality, inviting visitors to wander through a surreal wonderland of Portuguese aesthetics. Through immersive displays, it presents Portugal’s unique cultural heritage, lifestyle aesthetics and artisanal craftsmanship, while clearly outlining the development of contemporary Portuguese design.

Curator Evelyn said the exhibition features 10 lighting pieces in four chapters. “This brand is very special because it perfectly combines art, craft and design. Its founder’s love story began in Lisbon,” she said. That’s why the display evokes Lisbon’s most distinctive streetcar—the little yellow tram—which takes visitors even through narrow alleys.
Luis Costa, Commercial Counselor at the Portuguese Consulate in Shanghai, said the event is far more than an exhibition. “It brings together a group of companies to tell a tale about how we can work together to showcase the best of Portuguese design here,” he said. He added that Portugal hopes Chinese importers and consumers could recognize the quality, tradition and know-how in every piece, many of them handcrafted. “From lamps to cutlery and ceramics, each object has meaning and something to tell you.”
