Picturing an even brighter future for Chongming

FROM tomorrow to January 22, photos from the “Sky Eyes, Chongming Record” photography contest will be on display at Shanghai Library. The exhibition features over 900 photos — including the contest’s top prize winners — of the natural and cultural beauty of Chongming.
According to government plans, by 2020 Chongming will be developed into a “world-class ecological island.”
In service of this goal, forest coverage on the island will increase to 30 percent, while natural wetlands will account for 43 percent of the island’s territory. Meanwhile, 95 percent of ground water on the island will reach the “good” quality standard, and 95 percent of the sewage in the island’s towns will be collected and “well-treated.” All agricultural sewage will be processed before being discharged into rivers.
The population on the island will be kept to about 700,000 by 2020, and the average income will be doubled from that of 2010, government plans state. Actions will be taken to attract professionals from both home and abroad to live and work on the island.
Changxing Island, which is under Chongming’s jurisdiction, will become a key manufacturing base for high-end environmentally friendly industries.
