Theater starlets to show charm of Chinese operas
Outstanding young traditional opera performers from major theater troupes Shanghai will present classic excerpts from August 13 to 27 at Lyceum Theater.
The performances will cover a wide range of art forms including Peking Opera, Kunqu Opera, Yueju Opera, Huju Opera, Huaiju Opera and pingtan (storytelling to the music).
The series performance is a cultural event of "Bravo China," an original cultural program that aims to select grassroots traditional Chinese opera stars.
More than 1,000 enthusiasts, including little children and old men in their 90s, have applied for the televised competition.
On August 18, young performing artists will exchange ideas and interact with enthusiasts at Lippo Plaza. Short performing videos of the young artists will also be uploaded to the Internet.
According to the organizers, the event aims to exhibit the charm of traditional theater and shorten the distance between the arts and young people.
Celebrated Kunqu Opera artist Zhang Xunpeng said that young performers and fans are the future of traditional Chinese theater.
The series' young talent will also receive coaching from older artists.
