TWO brands of polished round-grained rice produced in Songjiang District were named the best locally-grown rice in a blind tasting by 11 rice experts and 100 citizen representatives.
The first Shanghai locally-produced rice tasting and election was held at the Shanghai Xijiao International Agricultural Product Trade Center, with 26 breeds of rice competing for one gold medal, two silver medals and three bronzes.
Sanmao Songxiang Rice 1018 cultivated by Songjiang Aquatic Breeding Farm and Songxiang Rice 1018 produced by Shanghai Songlin Industry and Trade Co Ltd, claimed the gold and silver awards, respectively.
The 26 brands of rice were weighed, boiled in identical electric cookers using the same brand of mineral water, with water proportion strictly in accordance with the standards.
The election was conducted on a blind basis, with different brands of rice randomly coded, and no producer and brand name labeled.
The result was based on the assessments of both the experts and citizens, each accounting for half of the total score.
The 11 domestic and foreign experts scored based on 10 indexes covering the rice grains’ exterior quality and the taste of the steamed rice.
While the appearance embraces the ratios of the polished, chalk white and yellow grains, the transparency of the grains, and their color and smell, the quality of cooked rice is judged from the smell, the exterior structure, palatability, taste and the texture of the cold rice.
The citizen representatives were invited to taste each brand of cooked rice. After observing, smelling, tasting and comparing, each voted for six brands they were most satisfied with.
Sponsored by Shanghai’s agricultural commission, the event is part of the city’s endeavor to promote the agricultural supply-side structural reform.
Based on the city’s exploration of the transformation from unhusked rice sales to polished rice sales, the election provided another push for the industrial management, scientific institutions and planting enterprises to better target the market and citizens’ demands, and further standardize the integrated process of rice production, processing and sales, so as to set up a whole set of new models of breeding and producing brand rices.
The event enabled more citizens to be involved in and understand the various links and whole process of the quality rice’s breeding source, planting, processing, storing, sales and marketing, according to the organizer.
With the set-up of a citizens’ interactive platform, and the sales database, the connection between the agricultural supply-side and the market and the citizens were greatly enhanced. The good reputation of the locally-produced rice will lay a solid foundation for the market expansion of local quality produce.
