A new microneedle therapy on show at the Shanghai section of the China Hi-Tech Fair provides painless injections and reduces the risk of infection.

The therapy is one of 50 high-tech projects that Shanghai companies and organizations took to fair in fields including green energy, information technology and intelligent manufacturing.

The microneedles ,developed by Shanghai Institute of Technology, are tightly clustered together on a platform which is similar in size to the absorbent pad of Band-Aid. Made of poly-L-lactic acid, polystyrene or hyaluronic acid come loaded with the drug to be delivered. They are extremely fine and even if some break under the skin, they will dissolve harmlessly.
