Souvenirs with innovative designs and a Shanghai flavor won awards Thursday after coming out tops in the city’s annual tourism souvenir competition.
They were selected from nearly 1,000 entries in this year’s competition managed by the Shanghai Administration of Culture and Tourism.
The winning works included a set of carved paper lanterns blending the ancient technique of paper carving dating back to the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220) and haipai (Shanghai) culture.
The three lamps were called “Glorious Days,” “Impression of Shanghai” and “A Taste of Jiangnan.” Jiangnan refers to the area to the south of the Yangtze River Delta.
A set of winning refrigerator magnets drew inspiration from 18 buildings in the Bund.
People can learn the stories behind the buildings by scanning the QR code on the magnet.
Also among the winning entries was a set of paperclips featuring the landmark architecture of the Lujiazui area including the Oriental Pearl TV Tower and Shanghai Tower.
Other winners were a set of car dashboard ornaments in the form of stylized “Shanghai women” wearing cheongsam and a tea set of Jinshan farmers’ paintings.
A public vote helped to determine the outcome of the competition.
Tourism authorities will help to take the winning works to market, and some will be sold at tourist attractions in the city such as the Oriental Pearl TV Tower.
Digital, cultural creativity and practical will be the trends for tourist product design in 2019, a report on tourism development predicted. The report was released during the awards ceremony.
