Premium spot for a tasty bite and service
If it’s a prime location, tasty Chinese food and a flawless service you’re looking for, then the Bund Shanghai is the place to be. Situated on the sixth floor of No. 5 on the Bund, which houses other premium dining venues, including M on the Bund and Atto Primo, it offers the very best of the city.
The riverfront location defines its premium status among the many Shanghainese restaurants in the metropolis. The restaurant offers only 10 elegantly decorated private rooms, which can accommodate between two and 14 people in rooms of varying sizes. Private rooms are part of the local dining culture for those who prefer something more intimate with an attentive service.
And the first impression was the service itself. The staff introduced the restaurant’s menu and specialties, listened to our requests and ensured the whole evening was pleasant success thanks to a flawless service.
We started with the local-style drunken roe crab. The crab was meaty and of good quality. Infused in rice wine with the right amount of salt, sugar, light soy sauce, plus condiments, the crabs were perfectly cooked, a bit sweet but with a pleasant liquor aroma.
Each bite was juicy and tasty. Shredded Yunnan zucchini with oil and vinegar was another favorite appetizer. It was presented nicely and the slightly sour note with a crispy texture made it a refreshing starter.
The chicken soup came next, made from a 300-day-old free-range Chongming Island chicken.
The soup had some golden droplets of fat on top. It was nice but I found it lacking in flavor and a bit oily. The mains included braised bean curd in spicy sauce with lobster. Stir-fried bean sprouts with rice wine and braised river globefish. Braised bean curd in spicy sauce is usually a good pick this time of year when the weather is cold and you need something hot to warm your stomach.
However I found this premium version with lobster meat inside less impressive among other dishes of the evening. The stir-fried bean sprouts with rice wine, however, exceeded my expectations.
They use the premium Chinese liquor Wuliangye to stir fry the vegetables and it turned out especially fragrant. The overall experience was satisfactory at Bund Shanghai if you have important guests to entertain.
