Roots & Shoots plants more seeds on sustainable development at forum
THE YES International Forum on Education for Sustainable Development celebrated the achievements of Shanghai Roots & Shoots’ environmental education program — Youth for Environmental Sustainability — at NYU Shanghai recently.
The program was launched 10 years ago as a grass-roots effort to bring interactive environmental education to students in Shanghai. YES continued to grow in the past decade, engaging thousands of students in green low-carbon actions. The forum was attended by more than 300 participants including educators, students, volunteers and people from the corporate community.
World renowned primatologist, UN Messenger of Peace and founder of global Roots & Shoots, Dr Jane Goodall, graced the forum with her keynote speech. At the age of 80, Goodall continues to travel 300 days a year inspiring millions around the world with her tireless effort to save the planet. She greeted the audience with “Good Morning!” and “你好!” and, a very special chimpanzee salutation “Hoo-hoo-hoo! Hooooo! Hooooo!”
Her fascinating stories from the early years in the jungle as well as her present-day journey that takes her to all parts of the world sowed seeds of hope in people’s hearts.
Following Goodall’s keynote speech, seven experts from home and abroad were invited to join in a panel discussion on environmental education in China.
In the afternoon, the seven experts delivered their workshops on a good variety of topics including solar power development, making bird-calls, building a green school, eco-working holidays and integrating drama in education for sustainable development.
