The
Urban Wastewater Plant’s Hydrogen Production-Hydrogen Storage-Cogeneration
Full-chain Pilot Test Application Research Project represents a pioneering
endeavor aimed at shaping the future energy landscape and advancing the
strategic goal of “double carbon.” Developed under the guidance of the United
Nations Industrial Development Organization, this initiative is spearheaded by
prominent industry leaders in Shanghai’s environmental protection, urban
investment, and water affairs sectors, including Shanghai CEO Environmental
Protection Technology Co., Ltd., and Shanghai Chengtou Water Group Co., Ltd. Situated
within the confines of the Shanghai Bailonggang Sewage Treatment Plant, the
largest of its kind in Asia, this project leverages the cutting-edge
capabilities of the Shanghai Municipal Sludge Treatment and Resource
Utilization Technology and Equipment Research and Verification Base, also known
as the Shanghai Sludge Treatment and Resource Utilization Technology Innovation
Center. At its core, the project harnesses the potential of photovoltaic power
generation within the sewage plant, utilizing electric energy to electrolyze
reclaimed water for hydrogen production. Additionally, biogas generated through
the anaerobic digestion of sludge serves as another source for hydrogen
production. What sets this project apart is its integration of safe hydrogen
storage technology and equipment, hydrogen fuel cells, and high-efficiency
hydrogen scenarios, culminating in a world-first achievement: the realization
of the full chain application that includes green hydrogen production, solid-state
hydrogen storage, and cogeneration, while demonstrating circular economy
principles.
Through
comprehensive application research spanning the entire industrial chain of
“hydrogen production-hydrogen storage-high-value utilization” within the urban
sewage treatment domain, this project stands poised to catalyze transformative
change. Its overarching objective is to spearhead technological innovation and
facilitate a paradigm shift in the sewage treatment industry. By doing so, it
not only fosters the advancement of the hydrogen energy sector but also plays a
pivotal role in promoting the principles of the circular economy. At its core,
this initiative holds profound implications for the realization of strategic
objectives such as carbon peak and carbon neutrality. By accelerating the
development of new quality productive forces and leveraging the synergies
between hydrogen production, storage, and high-value utilization, the project
lays the groundwork for sustainable, green, and cyclically-oriented
development.
Shanghai

investment, water infrastructure construction and management and water environment-related
research and development.
Within
the urban sewage and sludge treatment domain, the company boasts an impressive
portfolio of 16 sewage treatment projects, boasting a combined designed sewage
treatment capacity of 6.3705 million cubic meters per day. Their sewage
treatment processes cover a diverse range, from A/A/O and A/O to MBR and
improved oxidation ditch methods, covering mainstream municipal sewage
treatment needs comprehensively. Notably, the Bailonggang sewage treatment
plant, with a designed treatment capacity of 2.8 million cubic meters per day,
holds the distinction of being the largest of its kind in Asia. Furthermore,
the company operates 12 sludge treatment projects, with a designed treatment
capacity of 1,208.65 tons of dry basis per day, a 75% share of Shanghai’s
total. Their expertise extends across various sludge treatment processes,
including drying and incineration, vacuum low-temperature drying, and anaerobic
digestion.
Since
the inception of the Paris Agreement, nations worldwide have embarked on a
concerted journey towards green development and low-carbon transitions.
President Xi Jinping underscored China's commitment during the 75th session of
the United Nations General Assembly by pledging to peak carbon emissions by
2030 and strive towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. Embracing this
global imperative, the company is actively pursuing innovative strategies to
integrate sewage treatment with carbon emission reduction efforts. It has set
ambitious targets aligned with national goals, aiming to reduce carbon
emissions by 50% by 2030, followed by a further 90% reduction by 2040,
ultimately striving to attain carbon neutrality in the field of sewage
treatment by 2050. To realize these objectives, it is spearheading initiatives
to quantify carbon emissions from typical sewage plants, establish robust
methodologies for monitoring greenhouse gas emissions, and develop standardized
carbon emission accounting practices tailored to Shanghai’s urban sewage
treatment plants. Additionally, it is laying the groundwork for a comprehensive
carbon emissions management platform to facilitate efficient tracking and
mitigation strategies. Moreover, its research endeavors are dedicated to
exploring and implementing cutting-edge technologies geared towards carbon
emission reduction in wastewater treatment plants.
The
company is steadfast in its commitment to promoting the low-carbon and
intelligent operation of its sewage plants, thereby achieving a harmonized
approach to emission reduction. To this end, it has implemented a series of
innovative measures aimed at optimizing efficiency and minimizing environmental
impact. Central to its efforts is the adoption of intelligent technologies such
as intelligent aeration and dosing, aimed at optimizing resource usage and
reducing energy consumption, including electricity and pills. Additionally, it
has embraced zero-carbon solutions, notably through the implementation of
biogas cogeneration projects that harness waste biogas for power generation and
the maximization of waste heat resources. Furthermore, it has integrated
photovoltaic power generation technology into its operations to further augment
its renewable energy capabilities. In sludge dehydration and drying processes, it
has introduced water source heat pump technology, leveraging renewable energy
sources to enhance efficiency. By implementing negative carbon technologies and
prioritizing water reuse within sewage treatment processes, it has achieved a
remarkable 100% reuse rate within its facilities. Moreover, it extends
environmental stewardship beyond its premises by supplying cooling water for
urban greening and industrial enterprises, fostering sustainability on a
broader scale. In its commitment to resource efficiency, it utilizes all
resources from sludge incineration ash to produce valuable resource utilization
products, minimizing waste and maximizing utility. Additionally, it harnesses
the waste heat from mud drying carrier gas to reduce reliance on natural gas
within its systems, further optimizing its operations for sustainability and
efficiency.
