Breakthroughs in Chinese AI show potential of endogenous innovation - 2026-07-21

 

 

Thanks to the country's substantial inputs in research and development, strategic government initiatives and a robust tech ecosystem, Chinese developers have made notable breakthroughs in artificial intelligence. An example of this progress is the recent release of Kimi K3, an open-weight model from Chinese start-up Moonshot AI.

With 2.8 trillion parameters — the internal values that help an AI model learn and generate responses — Kimi K3 stands as the largest open-weight AI model announced to date, and it is particularly strong at coding. Arena AI, which ranks AI models based on blind human evaluations, placed it ahead of Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 on its Frontend Code Arena leaderboard.

The achievement in coding performance, combined with its competitive pricing and open-weight release, suggests that China's AI labs are continuing to close the gap with the leading AI labs in the United States — one that is now measured in just months rather than years.

Meanwhile, China has developed more than 400 complete humanoid robot products, accounting for over half of the world's total, according to data released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on Monday. The data also show that China-developed quadruped robots account for nearly 70 percent of global sales in the first half of the year.

The surge in AI and robotics innovation is further complemented by China's impressive advancements in integrated circuits, with the export value of such products increasing by 88.7 percent year-on-year in the first half of the year. This growth underscores the nation's expanding influence in both technological and economic arenas.

For a long time, certain politicians in the West have falsely claimed that China's technological progress depends on stealing foreign technology, using this as a pretext to impose restrictions and embargoes under the guise of safeguarding "national security".

In response to these challenges, China has significantly increased its investment in basic scientific research and established a comprehensive legal system for intellectual property protection. In recent years, the country has achieved multiple major core technological advances through independent innovation. These successive breakthroughs in cutting-edge sectors have effectively debunked the West's unfounded accusations.

China's approach to advancing AI technology exemplifies its vision of building a community with a shared future for humanity. Moving beyond the notion of AI as merely a contest for technological supremacy, China emphasizes international cooperation, inclusivity and the development of AI as a public good, as underscored by the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference and the High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance, held in Shanghai from Friday to Monday with the theme "AI Partnership for a Brighter Future".

To promote responsible AI development, China advocates a collective approach to formulating ethical standards for the use of AI, data security and a global governance framework.

The establishment of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization, which was announced at the opening of the conference, is intended to help foster a just and equitable global AI governance framework. By supporting capacity building in the Global South, China aims to bridge the AI and digital divides and foster international cooperation, while ensuring mutual benefits and shared advancements in AI technology.

The integration of AI across diverse sectors can enhance and accelerate the green transition and promote societal well-being.

By prioritizing open-source innovation, sustainable development and global partnerships, China aims to redefine AI as a tool for collective advancement, enabling all nations to share in the technological and economic gains of the AI revolution.
