Students center stage in theater festival - May 08, 2015

上海戏剧学院将为学生办戏剧节

THE Shanghai Theater Academy is staging an experimental theater festival intended to showcase the talents of its hardworking students.

Running until June 7, program highlights include an adaptation of Shakespeare’s romantic comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” as well as a selection of traditional Chinese opera works and creative musical performances.

The festival will also include a short film exhibition and other drama-related events.

According to Guo Yu, the academy’s deputy director, innovation features heavily in this year’s program.

“Bloodthirsty Mask,” a graduation drama put on by students in the academy’s acting department, is a new interpretation of the classic work “King of Lan Ling.” The play includes traditional Chinese theater elements, such as Peking Opera and puppetry and illusion.

Performances will run from May 16 to 22.

Also on the program, the original multi-act drama “Love of Maple” is set against the backdrop of China’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1937-45).

It tells of a wartime hero who fought to protect his country and people.

Students will also perform their own interpretation of the popular Broadway musical dance play “Contact.” The play, composed of separate dance pieces, represents the aspirations of characters looking to make romantic connections.

Off the stage, the fashion show “Color” will present body painting and fashion works from over 50 students.
