Reflecting light and changing shades - June 09, 2017

台湾艺术家朱振南上海个展亮相中华艺术宫

A solo exhibition by veteran Taiwan artist Chu Chen-Nan is underway at the China Art Museum through June 18.

It is the second stop after the National Museum in Beijing.

The exhibition features a collection of Chu’s calligraphy works and ink-wash paintings.

Chu has learned and practiced the traditional techniques of Chinese calligraphy from many prestigious predecessors.

He shows his depth and understanding of calligraphy with the work “Poetry from the Tang Dynasty” composed of eight scrolls in different writing styles that yet cater to a consistent theme.

In “Formless Form,” the artist extracts the essence and colors of mountain views to reflect the four seasons and natural landscapes, displaying the beauty of nature.

Chu’s understanding of the abstract style adheres to colors yet creates more possibilities of calligraphy techniques.

University campuses are fertile territory for Chu and his art. For more than a decade, he has been invited by universities such as the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Chang Gung University and the National Taipei University of Technology to serve as their artist in residence and honorary artist. He has also had solo exhibitions held in Paris, New York and Tokyo.

Chu’s inspiration comes from the light and changing shades on the northeastern coast where he captures the red sun, purple clouds, blue sky and the sea. Those, he says, reflect his yearning for his homeland.
