Book Week at Dulwich College Shanghai - May 05, 2014

上海德威英国国际学校读书周开幕

PEOPLE can learn from people or learn from nature, however, I learn from the books. With the existence of books, there are no problems that are unsolvable. Books are good, good for your life. It brings you into the world of fantasy, a world within the world we live in. On the Wednesday of Book Week, senior school had reading time, where every student put aside all their work and enjoyed quiet and quality reading time. As an IB Student, one does not have a lot of time to spare, so I was really glad that we had some "compulsory" time to read. On the Thursday of Book Week, during a free period, several students including myself went to the library of DUCKS (Dulwich College Kindergarten and Infants School) to read to the students. The moment I stepped into the DUCK's library, I could feel the "books" in the air. Everyone is reading enthusiastically. Some huddled around the teacher that was reading to them, paying close attention to the story with a smile on their face. Some sat on their parent's lap, listening quietly to the story. Thereby, I can see the whole Dulwich community, including the parents, was enjoying the season of reading. When I was reading with a reception student, whose first language isn't English, books became our common language. First we read "Thomas the Tank Engine." Throughout the book, he kept linking the pictures from the book to what he learned. He identified the facial expressions of the tank engines whether they were smiling happily or angry with a gloomy face, also the white ash as snow. At first, he was a bit shy when I first sat down with a book, however, by the end the session, he was really talkative and took initiative reading other books with me. This is the season of reading in Dulwich College Shanghai. (Ivan Kwok is a student at Dulwich.)
