音乐厅推出全新沉浸式制作   2022-12-18

I Dreamed a Dream is a 50-minute immersive theater show. The first round of 10 performances will play at the Music Infinity space at the Shanghai Concert Hall on weekends through Sunday.

A new immersive theater show at the Music Infinity space of the Shanghai Concert Hall takes audiences on a morning metro train ride with a young man on the way to work.

As he dozes off and slips into the dream world, audiences get to witness his dreamy encounter with a woman dressed in a traditional Chinese costume and embark on a musical journey involving the pipa, guzheng, bamboo flute and a host of other Chinese instruments.

At one point, they even get to pick up castanets and sand hammers to be a part of the performance themselves.

Titled I Dreamed a Dream, this 50-minute theater production was created specially for the Music Infinity space on the fourth floor of the Shanghai Concert Hall, where an exhibition about traditional Chinese music is taking place. The first round of 10 performances is taking place on the weekends from Dec 9 to Sunday.

"Besides being an iconic location for music appreciation, the 92-year-old Shanghai Concert Hall needs to open up more performing spaces that are unique and vibrant to the public, so as to satisfy people's diverse demand for performing art experiences, and let them go home happily and fulfilled," says Fang Jing, general manager of the Shanghai Concert Hall, referring to the reason behind the production.

In October 2021, the Shanghai Concert Hall launched an interactive exhibition about Chinese music that introduced the distinctive sounds, tonality, scales, as well as origin and inheritance of Chinese music and musical instruments. The exhibition was well-received and many people brought their children along for the educational experience, according to local news portal Shanghai Observer.

Though the exhibition concluded in August, the concert hall, after witnessing its theatrical potential, was reluctant to remove the exhibition. It then decided to bring live music, dance and theater into the space and create a new show.

"We wanted to take traditional Chinese music to a new context," says Tao Qianni, playwright of I Dreamed a Dream. "We all know that feeling of being on a crowded metro train, listening to music and temporarily escaping from reality by daydreaming."

According to Liu Jie, the project manager, Shanghai Concert Hall wants to continue exploring new possibilities for the Music Infinity space.

"There can be other immersive shows, and special projects for families too," he says.
