Shanghai's Drug Makers, Pharmacies Go All Out to Ensure Medicine Supply as Covid Cases Spiral
Shanghai's pharmaceutical firms are hiking output of the drugs used to prevent and treat the novel coronavirus and pharmacies are stockpiling to ensure adequate supply as Covid-19 cases surge amid an easing of pandemic prevention measures in the country.
Demand for fever-reducing and cough medicines as well as painkillers have exploded in the past week, Shanghai Pharmaceutical Holding said on its WeChat account on Dec. 17. Sales of its ibuprofen capsules and other products have increased noticeably.
As a result, since early this month Shanghai Pharmaceuticals has been hiking output of the medicines used to treat Covid-19, one of which has even doubled in capacity, and is actively sourcing raw materials and packaging materials.
Henan Genuine Biotech has more than quadrupled the daily output of its Azvudine tablet, which was first developed to treat HIV-infected patients and has since been approved to treat Covid-19, to 300,000 bottles a day, a company insider told Yicai Global.
Shanghai Fosun Pharmaceutical Group, which is one of the sales agents of the oral antiviral pill, is linking arms with China National Pharmaceutical Group and other drugmakers to leverage their sales channels and expand their sales network coverage, a person close to Fosun Pharma told Yicai Global.
Azvudine is available for bulk purchase by hospitals and clinics in all 31 provincial-level regions, including those at the grassroot level, he added.
Fosun Pharma is also increasing production of Covid-19 antigen tests. "At present, we can produce the reagents needed to test six million people a day and can expand capacity quickly, if necessary," he said.
Johnson & Johnson's factories are working at full capacity and the company is prioritizing supply to countries in its Asia-Pacific supply chain network, a person connected to the US pharma giant's China arm said. The New Jersey-based company's pain-relieving and fever-reducing drugs Motrin and Tylenol are in great demand.
Shanghai No.1 Pharmacy is stocking up on therapies by bringing in stock from other places and buying from suppliers without adding preconditions, the chain drug store told Yicai Global.
