Shanghai Inks USD14.7 Billion of Key Industrial Projects in One Month
Shanghai has signed over 160 key industrial projects with a total investment of CNY100 billion (USD14.7 billion) since the beginning of this year, according to an official.
"In 2023, we will vigorously promote stable industrial investment and growth, making efforts to attract investment while promoting major industrial projects and technological transformation,” Zhang Hongtao, chief engineer of the Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization, said at a press conference yesterday. This year, Shanghai has already kicked off more than 60 key industrial projects with a total investment exceeding CNY70 billion (USD10.3 billion), he added.
In 2022, Shanghai's industrial investment staged a V-shaped rebound to exceed CNY170 billion for the first time, achieving a 0.6 percent increase year-over-year, the official disclosed.
The economic hub will focus on leading and pillar industries this year, per Zhang. It will make full use of major events, such as the 2023 Global Investment Promotion Conference, which will be held in April, and the China International Import Expo in November to accelerate the development of new industries. The city will bring in a batch of major industrial projects with high capacity, large scale, and good demonstration effects, Zhang added.
The three "leading industries" for Shanghai's economic development are integrated circuits, biopharmaceuticals, and artificial intelligence, per the municipal government. The pillar industries include steel, automobiles, shipbuilding, and petrochemicals.
In 2022, Shanghai's industrial output retained a scale of CNY4 trillion (USD589.6 billion). The production of the city's three select "leading industries" grew by 11 percent from a year earlier and that of the pillar industries rose by 1 percent, according to Zhang.
