Air Passenger Traffic at Shanghai's Pudong, Hongqiao Int'l Airports Rises Over 30% in January
Passenger throughput at Pudong International Airport and Hongqiao International Airport, Shanghai's two air hubs, rose more than 30 percent last month from a year earlier.
Some 2.8 million people departed from or landed at Pudong Airport in January, an increase of 34 percent from a year ago, Shanghai Airport Group said in a briefing yesterday. The figure for Hongqiao Airport was 2.6 million, up nearly 38 percent, it added.
Pudong Airport's international passenger throughput was 367,100 last month, jumping more than 121 percent from the same period of 2022, its operator noted, adding that the airport handled about 110 international passenger flights a day to 43 destinations in 31 countries in January.
The cargo and mail traffic at both of the city's airports fell 28 percent and 32 percent to 229,000 tons and 23,000 tons, respectively, last month from a year ago.
During the 40-day Spring Festival travel rush from Jan. 17 to Feb. 15, the two airports had traffic of over 8.1 million inbound and outbound passengers, a gain of 39 percent from a year ago and recovering to 60 percent of 2019's pre-pandemic level.
The number of guaranteed flights during the Spring Festival travel rush was 66,700, up 5.6 percent from a year earlier and rebounding to nearly 80 percent of the same period in 2019.
Affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and major asset restructuring, Shanghai Airport remained under pressure last year. The firm expects a net loss of between CNY2.8 billion and CNY3 billion (USD410 million and USD435 million) for 2022, up 80 percent to 85 percent from the prior year, it said in an earnings forecast.
Shanghai Airport Chairman Feng Xin said earlier that as long as throughput gradually recovers, the company will likely swing back into the black this year.
