A report on the Pacific Rim life security was released in an academic seminar jointly held by China Foreign Affairs University and Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in May.
Pacific Rim Life Security Index, the first life security index based on big data analysis, uses the method of semantic and clustering analysis and focuses on 15 second-level indicators and nearly 100 third-level indicators in 4 dimensions.
The health dimension includes life expectancy, newborn health, maternal health, Infectious disease prevention and control, and medical resources per capita indicators.
The natural dimension includes extreme climate, geological disasters and environmental pollution response indicators. The social dimension includes peace, anti-terrorism, and social security indicators.
The psychological dimensions include self-harm intervention, suicide intervention, prevention and treatment of mental illness, and happiness indicators.
Based on the analysis of four million pieces of data from authoritative international organizations and important search engines, the index shows the individual security conditions in 43 countries in the Pacific Rim region, indicating possible life security risks.
Experts in fields of international relations, economy, big data and medical care attended the meeting and joined in a discussion on the report's value and function.
Zhou Qi, president of the Institute of Global Governance and Development of the Renmin University of China and vice president of the Pacific Society of China, said that the index is in line with personal feelings, proving that its method is relatively scientific. The index shows that the development level of countries is not necessarily positively correlated with the security level, which is thought-provoking and worth studying.
Su Hao, a professor at China Foreign Affairs University, and director of the Center for Strategy and Conflict Management, said the index puts forward the concept of Pacific Rim security, and makes innovative conceptual designs for human cognition, social construction and human security maintenance with international and human significance.
Liu Huaqin, a researcher at the Institute of International Trade and Economic Cooperation of the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China, and director of the Eurasian Research Institute, said that the index provides a new tool for the study of human life security.
Wang Chunying, a professor and director of the Department of Diplomacy and Foreign Affairs Management, China Foreign Affairs University, said the index contributes to the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative and provides guidance for enterprise investment.
Dong Qingling, a professor at University of International Business and Economics and director of the National Security Computing Laboratory, said the index updates every 24 hours through big data technology, which is progress in index production.
Song Wei, a professor at Beijing Foreign Studies University, said that there are over 40 countries in the Pacific Rim, many of whom are involved in the Belt and Road Initiative. The index could show the characteristics of the countries and promote cooperation.
Yang Haiping, deputy director of the editorial Department and deputy editor of the Pacific Journal, said that the index provides data support for future international competition and cooperation.
Li Fujian, deputy director of the Global Biosafety Governance Research Center, China Foreign Affairs University, said the index is a public good with Chinese wisdom. The index can provide references for individual tourism, travel, studies abroad and employment, construct life security culturally, and help incorporate the life security concept into the education system.
Zhang Jian, secretary-general of the Center for Russian Studies at China Foreign Affairs University, said that the index has important practical and theoretical value, and the release of it is a manifestation of diplomatic capabilities, which is conducive to promoting the development of major-country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics.
