长江-密西西比河流域论坛上海开放 2023-11-07

The Yangtze-Mississippi Regional Forum was held in Shanghai on Monday.
The International Research Center for Rivers and Deltas of East China Normal University was unveiled at the Yangtze-Mississippi Regional Forum in Shanghai on Monday.
The center will focus on the sustainable and social-economic development of the large river basins and river deltas.
"In the context of global changes in the 21st century, the river basins have been severely affected by human activities due to the dense population and active economy," said Mei Bing, professor and the chair of the University Council at East China Normal University. "The Yangtze River and the Mississippi River are both world-class rivers. The healthy and sustainable development of the river deltas cannot be achieved without a profound understanding of the river basins."
To promote communication across various aspects in the two river basins, the forum was organized by East China Normal University and Shanghai People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (SPAFFC).
Experts and scholars gave keynote presentations on topics such as the green development of the Yangtze River Basin and the Mississippi River Basin, and legislation regarding the development of the Yangtze River Basin. Roundtable discussions on cooperation mechanisms and sustainable development issues were also held.
"Although the Yangtze River and Mississippi River belong to different regions, they are both famous rivers in the world," said Chen Jing, president of SPAFFC. "The basins of these two rivers are important economic regions, providing important support for local economic and social development, and leaving us with rich historical and cultural heritage."
According to Chen, both river basins are facing challenges in environmental protection and sustainable economic and social development.
Besides environmental protection, Chen also suggested creating more cooperation opportunities in education, sports, culture, sports, economy, and trade, as well as local legislation.
