CIIE Brings Unexpected Gains From China Every Year, Idaho Trade Official Says
The China International Import Expo brings unpredicted gains every year to Idaho which is sending representatives to the annual expo for the fourth time this year, according to the chief representative of the northwestern state's China trade office.
China is one of Idaho’s top five export destinations and a large market for the state to pursue export and cooperation opportunities, Qu Danran said to Yicai during the ongoing sixth CIIE held in Shanghai. Besides Georgia, Idaho is one of the two US states to join the six-day expo this year.
Idaho-based companies signed three letters of intent to purchase green peas, green lentils, and pet supplies at the state's booth on Nov. 6 when the American Food and Agriculture pavilion opened. Idaho’s main exports to the Chinese market are agricultural products, including frozen potatoes, alfalfa hay, beef, pork, dairy products, animal feed, and feed additives, as well as barley, and wheat, Qu added.
Georgia sent representatives to the CIIE for the first time. China has been Georgia’s largest trading partner for 10 years both regarding import and export value, Xu Sixing, managing director of the China office at the Georgia Department of Economic Development, told Yicai.
Agri International is one of the largest food producers in the United States, and some of its core products include mayonnaise and barbecue sauce, per Mohammad Abdelfattah, business manager at the Atlanta-headquartered company. Agri is hoping to develop the Chinese market for various products such as vegetable oils and rice.
Georgia trade official Xu spoke about the resilience of foreign trade. “We attach great importance to the Chinese market. We set up an office in China early in 2008. Despite the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the bilateral trade ties still exist.”
There are over 150 Chinese-owned companies in Georgia. Some of them are production-oriented and have chosen to set up facilities in the southeastern state because their customers conduct business mainly in the US, Xu said.
Partnerships between Chinese and US enterprises are not limited to Georgia's agricultural sector, Xu said. In fact, the state is also committed to building an electric vehicle hub so there are many supporting facilities. However, the state already has many South Korean enterprises in the electric vehicle field so Chinese companies in this industry are mainly supply chain firms that focus on new energy and storage.
In addition, Georgia is the second-largest state in the US to plant cotton with almost 1.2 million acres of dedicated land, according to public information. Moreover, it once had the second-biggest share of employees in the States engaged in textile manufacturing. In the past, Georgia’s carpet industry attracted many Chinese companies to take a look, Xu added.
