德国科思创聚合物公司使用新能源卡车运送化学品 2023-12-21
German polymer materials maker Covestro began using electric trucks to transport chemicals over short distances at its integrated production base in Shanghai, marking the operational start of the site’s green logistics pilot program.
Covestro began the project last November in collaboration with Cosco Shipping Logistics & Supply Chain Management, a unit of China Ocean Shipping Group, the Leverkusen-based firm said yesterday. Early on, they replaced a diesel vehicle with an electric heavy truck to move polymerized diphenylmethane diisocyanate from the Shanghai base to surrounding depots, it added.
About 70 percent of Covestro's products are transported by truck in the Asia Pacific region, so its efforts to reduce carbon emissions from logistics focus on trucks, it noted. The green logistics program aims to devise more sustainable methods for road transportation using trucks, the firm pointed out.
“We are committed to expanding our network of partnerships to actively seek, pilot, and scale up sustainable, low-carbon logistics solutions that meet both environmental and commercial needs," said Marius Wirtz, Covestro’s senior vice president for Asia Pacific supply chain and logistics.
“We anticipate continued progress in introducing new solutions aimed at significantly reducing our scope 3 emissions, thereby propelling us towards a climate-neutral future,” he said.
The program can help reduce emissions from diesel trucks by 22 percent, or by 43 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, by next year, Covestro noted. The program can achieve net-zero carbon emissions if green power is used to charge electric heavy trucks, it pointed out.
Covestro and Cosco Shipping Logistics will regularly evaluate and optimize the use of the electric trucks and then decide whether to expand the use of new energy vehicles to cover other transportation scenarios, the German firm said.
About 80 percent of Covestro's carbon emissions stem from scope 3, or indirect greenhouse gas emissions from upstream and downstream processes. The company aims to achieve scope 1 and 2 by 2035, meaning reduce direct emissions from its operations and indirect emissions from purchased energy to net zero.
Covestro began building its Shanghai integrated production base in 2001, investing EUR3.7 billion (USD4.1 billion) in it as of the end of last year, according to the firm’s website. With 11 factories, it is the company's largest integrated base globally.
