Shanghai's tourism revenue soared 77% last year
Shanghai's revenue from tourism jumped 77 percent last year from the previous one, according to the latest official data.
Income from tourism hit CNY412.2 billion (USD57 billion) in the 12 months ended Dec. 31, Cheng Meihong, deputy director general of the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism, said at a press conference on Tuesday.
Shanghai hosted 3.6 million inbound tourists last year, Cheng noted. Over 45,000 commercial performances were held in the eastern Chinese city in 2023, with the number of concerts, music festivals, and performances up over 60 percent to 194 from 2019.
Shanghai welcomed China's biggest inbound tourist group since the easing of Covid-19 prevention and control measures during the four-day Qinming Festival holiday ended April 6. Over 3,000 tourists from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and other countries visited the city in the period.
In July, Shanghai will hold the world's largest-ever exhibition of ancient Egyptian artifacts outside the northern African country, as 787 relics from different periods of ancient Egyptian civilization will be on display in the city. Over 95 percent of the artifacts will make their Asian debut.
