Shanghai Institute of Ceramics develops smart, energy-saving glass material

The Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences has reportedly developed an intelligent energy-saving glass material that can adjust its color and transparency, enabling temperature control.

The material is a new electrochromic structure developed through collaboration between researchers, including Cao Xun from the SICCAS and professor Yang Ronggui from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, The Paper reported on Wednesday, citing the research findings published on May 14 on international academic journal Nature Sustainability under the title ‘Tri-Band Electrochromic Smart Window for Energy Savings in Buildings.’

The new electrochromic material has a higher energy-saving effect compared to commercial Low-E glass in most climate regions around the world. It can be used for thermal management of windows, maximizing the utilization of solar radiation in the visible and near-infrared spectrum, and radiation in the mid-infrared spectrum for cooling purposes.

Outdoor experiments conducted by research teams in Shanghai and Sanya in Hainan province have shown that under typical sunny weather conditions, the new glass material can achieve continuous cooling throughout the day, with a maximum temperature reduction of up to 14 degrees Celsius.

This discovery provides a tremendous opportunity for innovative, smart, energy-efficient window designs, contributing to global carbon neutrality and sustainable development.
