Multinationals share recycling experiences at forum in Shanghai

Chinese and foreign multinational corporations from different sectors, including international coffee giant Nespresso and Chinese logistics firm Cainiao Smart Logistics Network, shared their experiences promoting recycling at a forum in Shanghai.

Alibaba Group Holding-backed Cainiao set up package recycling points at around 200,000 of its delivery stations, encouraging customers to recycle parcel boxes, Yin Yi, head of the company's environmental, society, and governance department, said at Circularity: Climate Technology Leads a New Urban Circular Economy on Oct. 24.

Circularity was jointly held by the Shanghai Climate Week and the China ESG Alliance. The Shanghai Climate Week is a joint initiative of over 100 ecology partners run by the United Nations and the Chinese government. The China ESG Alliance is supported by enterprises, such as Microsoft, Tencent Holdings, and Longi Green Energy Technology, global organizations and institutions, and Chinese authorities, such as the Shanghai Environment and Energy Exchange.

Cainiao also provides logistics services to the recycling initiatives of sportswear giant Nike, consumer goods multinational Procter & Gamble, cosmetics behemoth L'Oréal, and other partners, Yin noted.

Nespresso launched an initiative to recycle aluminum and coffee ground packages, Lu Hanlin, the Swiss company's general manager for China, said at the forum.

McDonald's said that the US fast food chain started providing customers with tableware made of green materials and recycled plastics and paper products.

Chinese businesses planning to expand in Europe should first have a deep understanding of the local legislative landscape, Tamara Veldboer, a consultant at Amsterdam-based global impact organization Circle Economy, said during her speech at the forum.

Meeting local regulatory requirements is the first thing Nio considers when developing in overseas markets, said Guo Yuzhu, head of the Chinese new energy vehicle startup's sustainable developments department.

European customers care more about environmental protection than Chinese ones, Guo noted, adding that many Europeans visit Nio stores to learn the recycling procedures for batteries and interior materials.

This year's Shanghai Climate Week was held in April over a five-day period. Companies and organizations from all over the world have already expressed interest in participating in the event's next session, Zou Rong, co-director of the Shanghai Climate Week's executive committee, said at the forum.
