比利时自行车手完成史诗般的上海之旅   2025-08-31

Belgium cyclist Claude Brouir poses for a photo in front of the poster welcoming his arrival at Shanghai, the final destination for his four-month riding journey from Brussels, on Aug 30.

A warm welcome ceremony was held beneath the iconic Oriental Pearl TV Tower last Saturday for Claude Brouir, a 63-year-old Belgian cycling enthusiast who successfully completed a monumental 12,000-kilometer journey from Brussels to Shanghai on a solar-powered tricycle.

Brouir embarked on his extraordinary expedition on April 19, traversing the vast Eurasian continent over more than 120 days. His arrival in Shanghai marks the triumphant conclusion of a deeply personal mission, conceived not as a spontaneous adventure but as a meticulously planned endeavor to connect with China.

The inspiration for the "Bike2Shanghai" ride was sparked during Brouir's first visit to China in November of last year. He came to Shanghai to see his eldest son, who is married and settled in the city. During that trip, he participated in a local cycling event, an experience he said profoundly changed his perception of the country and ignited a deep fascination.

"That trip planted the seed for a bold idea: to cycle from Brussels all the way to Shanghai, exploring more of China along the way," Brouir said during an interview when he set off from Brussels.

Adhering strictly to a philosophy of sustainable travel, Brouir made the journey on a customized solar-powered tricycle. The unique vehicle, equipped with a trailer carrying his tent and essentials, features two electric motors and four solar panels that together generate up to 500 watts of theoretical power, allowing him to tackle both level roads and steep climbs emission-free.

"Through the journey, I have had the chance to appreciate the rich natural and cultural landscapes of China and received kind assistance from the people along the route," Brouir said, reflecting on his four-month trek.

His arrival holds added significance, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the European Union, with next year marking the 55th anniversary of Sino-Belgian ties.

Brouir added that the bustling scenery and warm atmosphere of Shanghai made him feel that the end of his ride was also a new starting point for deepening exchanges.

Now in Shanghai on a family-visit visa valid until the end of September, the intrepid cyclist is eager to explore the city he worked so hard to reach.

"I like to see the difference of the buildings. It's a town more like a European city. It appears an international tone," he said, beaming with a big smile.

The welcoming ceremony was attended by Jin Lei, deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism, who emphasized the city's commitment to fostering people-to-people ties.

"Shanghai will, as always, welcome friendly individuals from Belgium and Europe to China and enjoy their stay in Shanghai, jointly building a bridge of communication connecting China and Europe," Jin said.
