AIR defense sirens will sound across the city on September 20, marking the 14th National Defense Education Day, the Shanghai Civil Defense Office said yesterday.

The National Defense Education Day is marked on the third Saturday of September every year. Usually, the sirens are sounded for several times around noon throughout the city — except at the Hongqiao and Pudong airports.

A series of activities are also usually scheduled for the day. Community offices and schools will organize drills and lectures to train the public on how to act in the case of an emergency.
