China's Summer Box Office Takings Top USD1.1 Billion so Far

China's cinema ticket sales in the summer season, which stretches from June 1 to Aug. 31, have reached CNY7.7 billion (USD1.1 billion) as of today, already more than last summer, online news outlet The Paper reported today.

So far 198 million tickets have been sold for 25 million screenings, the report said, citing ticketing platform Maoyan. Last year, the summer box office came to CNY7.3 billion.

Box office sales have picked up considerably since June from earlier in the year, when outbreaks of Covid-19 forced many cinemas to shutter. In the past month and a half, cinema takings over the weekend have reached CNY300 million (USD44 million) and on weekdays, up to CNY100 million. By contrast, in the three months from March to May, total ticket sales amounted to less than CNY2.2 billion.

The China Film Administration has been launching a series of promotions this month to get people back in cinemas. On Aug. 11, it said it will distribute CNY100 million (USD14.7 million) worth of vouchers with movie ticketing platforms between August and October. And the same day it said it has teamed up with China Construction Bank which will allocate CNY50 million to subsidize movie goers.

The summer box office accounts for nearly 30 percent of annual takings. “This summer, cinemas screened the most films and the best selection of movies since the start of the pandemic,” said Liu Zhenfei, senior analyst at Maoyan Research Institute. Several popular films are scheduled to be released later in the year and the market is expected to bounce back further.

There should be a strong recovery in the movie industry in the third quarter, after a summer of strong ticket sales and as a number of highly anticipated films are released, according to a recent report by Northeast Securities.
