Shanghai Introduces China’s First Standard for Bookstore Coffee Service

Shanghai, the city with the largest number of coffee shops in China, has introduced the country’s first standard for coffee service in bookstores.

Industry insiders said the new standard is conducive to forming a good reputation for cafes with bookstores while providing new opportunities for the stores’ development.

The local standard, passed at a meeting on Aug. 15 amid the ongoing second Shanghai Coffee Culture Week, consists of 170 rules in 23 clauses, split into three sections of services specifications, grade evaluation and coffee mixologists skills, The Paper reported today. It effectively standardizes equipment, hygiene requirements, service personnel conditions and service procedures.

The report quoted industry insiders as pointing out that bookstore cafes have become the mainstream. The introduction of the standard not only provides a reference for the operation of bookstore cafes, but also grades them with scores.

This will help enhance the market reputation and image of bookstore cafes and provide new opportunities for their development, they added.

The second Shanghai Coffee Culture Week, which began on Aug. 4, will last for 14 days. According to data previously disclosed by Wang Yayuan, deputy director of the Shanghai State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, the number of coffee shops in Shanghai has increased even amid Covid-19. As of the end of June, the figure approached 8,000, an increase of nearly 1,000 over last year.

The domestic coffee market was worth CNY113 billion (USD16.7 billion) last year, up 31.2 percent from 2020, with sustained expansion of the coffee consuming group, a report released by e-commerce giant Alibaba during the ongoing coffee culture week showed. The figure is expected to double to more than CNY200 billion by 2024.
