BRI Report Highlights China-Europe Rail Freight Achievements
By the end of last month, China-Europe freight trains had made over 57,000 trips since the service began in March 2011, carrying 5.3 million twenty-foot equivalent unit containers, a report showed.
The glowing report, published by the Office of the Leading Group on Promoting the Implementation of Belt and Road Initiatives showed, noted that 98.3 percent of the TEUs were loaded with goods worth almost USD300 billion.
Given a fee of only 20 percent of that of air transport and a delivery time just 25 percent of sea freight period, the China-Europe freight train is an attractive choice to transport products of a certain volume and with more urgency, Xu Jianping, head of the Department of Regional Opening-Up under the National Development and Reform Commission, told a press conference today.
The freight service is a new all-weather, large-volume, green and low-carbon land transport channel, which is a major innovation of international transport service system, with a small environmental impact and high stability, he said.
The China-Europe freight train, a flagship project and iconic brand of the BRI, has become an important bridge for international economic and trade cooperation, Xu noted. With sustained progress in BRI co-construction, the service is the path where China and BRI partner countries have the closest economic and trade connections.
As of the end of last month, China-Europe freight trains’ network of transport services covered the whole of Europe with 82 transport routes reaching 196 cities in 24 European countries, forming a major international transport artery running through Eurasia, the report showed.
The categories of good transported have gradually expanded from mobile phones and other information technology devices to 53 categories, including clothing, shoes and hats, autos and accessories, grain, wine, coffee beans, and wood, and more than 50,000 varieties, covering all aspects of production and life needs in countries and regions along the BRI route.
Following the Covid-19 outbreak which crippled marine and air transport, Chinese operators of China-Europe freight trains took the initiative to check on the export needs of businesses. They cooperated with a large number of firms, including TCL, Dell, Lenovo, Geely and Volvo, to provide customized cargo trains.
The number of such customized trains had reached 1,150 at the start of this year, effectively reducing the pandemic’s impact on the stability of international industrial and supply chains.
In the next step, the General Administration of Customs will support related cities to pilot postal parcel transport by China-Europe freight trains under the premise of meeting regulatory conditions, Xia Jun, deputy director of the GAC’s Department of Port Control, said at the presser, answering a question from Yicai Global.
It will guide and encourage more firms to take part in the China-Europe freight train cross-border e-commerce goods transport, the official added.
