China's Small Goods Capital Yiwu Gets Back to Work as Lockdown Ends
Businessmen in Yiwu, eastern Zhejiang province are working long hours to catch up with a huge backlog of orders after a week-long lockdown to combat an outbreak of Covid-19 brought the ‘world’s small commodities capital’ grinding to a halt.
Over 98 percent of businesses had resumed work as of Aug. 20, numbering 805 enterprises, Mayor Luo Xiaojun said yesterday. Industrial electricity consumption has been on the rise for the last six days and is now back to pre-lockdown levels, he added.
Yiwu imposed a three-day lockdown on Aug. 11 which was then extended in certain areas of the city, preventing businesses, manufacturing and logistics from functioning. Since Aug. 18, lockdown was lifted in most parts of the city, including its largest wholesale marketplace, the Yiwu International Trade City.
It will take at least 10 days to catch up, Chen Xianchun, sales manager of Yiwu Jinzun Stationery, told Yicai Global, adding that his staff are all working overtime.
“We have suffered a heavy loss as we missed a peak period for orders,” said the head of a medium-sized business in Yiwu International Trade City, which reopened yesterday. "We receive most of our orders after the start of the school year and it is impossible to make up for lost time.”
“We have come to Yiwu to see the commodities for ourselves and ask for modifications based on the preferences and requirements of our customers,” said Hassan, a member of a group of 107 Indian businessmen who were released from quarantine on Aug. 20. If we were not able to travel to Yiwu, we would only be able to place orders for products that we have bought before, he said.
E-commerce logistics have also started up again and major distribution hubs have reopened. The Yiwu-Madrid rail link continued to operate throughout the latest outbreak, with an average of 4.2 trains a day, carrying 356 twenty-foot equivalent units. This was a 7 percent and 11 percent increase on July, respectively.
Yiwu logged two new cases of Covid-19 on Aug. 21 that were found among patients in quarantine, according to the municipal government. Since the outbreak started on Aug. 2, Yiwu has reported 712 infections, including 91 confirmed cases and 621 asymptomatic ones.
