Shanghai Is Emerging as New AI Tech Hub, Official Says
Shanghai’s artificial intelligence sector has been growing rapidly and AI tech has been used in various industries since the first World Artificial Intelligence Conference in 2018, a local government official said today.
The annual WAIC in Shanghai has boosted the development of the city’s AI industry, and more than 200 key AI projects with a total investment of over CNY60 billion (USD8.8 billion) were agreed on at past WAICs, according to Wu Jincheng, director of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization.
Shanghai’s AI industry has doubled in scale since 2018, and the number of people working in the sector had climbed CNY180,000 last year from 100,000 in 2018, Wu told reporters today.
Past WAICs have promoted major AI innovators and projects in Shanghai, such as the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Shanghai Research Institute for Intelligent Autonomous Systems, and Shanghai Baiyulan Open AI Lab, Wu said.
The Shanghai government has issued some key policies at past WAICs to guide the strategic blueprint of its AI industry, Wu noted, adding that AI is being used in more areas at a faster speed, so Shanghai is drafting China’s first provincial-level law to promote AI development.
The 2022 WAIC will be held at the Shanghai Expo Center from Sept. 1 to 3, and over 500 guests have confirmed they will attend, including Nobel Prize winners, members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, presidents of top colleges and universities, and representatives of organizations and entrepreneurs in the AI field.
This year’s event will hold plenary sessions for AI tech innovation and industrial development as well as 10 forums.
