Shanghai to Host Second Int'l Biopharma Industry Week Next Month
The second Shanghai International Biopharma Industry Week will be held from Sept. 25 to 30, aiming to promote cooperative development of the industry between Shanghai and the Yangtze River Delta region and attract high-quality global resources.
The Shanghai Bio-Industrial Park is rich in land resources and biomedical product application scenarios, Liu Ping, deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology, said in a speech yesterday.
It has more than 240,000 biotech workers and has gathered about 25 percent of the country's high-end and innovative pharmaceutical talent, Liu said. Shanghai also has plentiful financing capabilities, while total financing of the city's biomedical industry ranks first in the country, he added.
The Yangtze River Delta region has various advantages in China's biomedical industry. As Shanghai is the region's leading and central area, the city's biomedical sector was likely worth CNY761.714 billion (USD110.37 billion) last year, accounting for about a sixth of Shanghai's total gross domestic product, a record high. This also helps to drive the industrial development of surrounding areas, Liu noted.
Shanghai Zhangjiang Science City is home to the city's biomedical industry, with more than 1,400 biomedical innovative enterprises and branches of seven of the top 10 global pharmaceutical companies.
At present, the number of new drugs developed by Zhangjiang makes up nearly a third of China's total, and more than 600 varieties of drugs are being developed there.
Zhangjiang also leads the country for the number of top 100 pharmaceutical enterprises and the number of unicorns, as well as for applied invention patents and the number of clinical trials for new drugs.
Li Qiang, secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee, visited local biomedical firms and research and development centers in early August. He said it is necessary to create a world-class business environment and promote the construction of a world-class biomedical industry cluster.
The first Shanghai International Biopharma Industry Week, held last October, drew top scientists, entrepreneurs, investors, and medical workers, as well as a number of important biomedical industry projects. Investment deals worth CNY61.3 billion (USD 8.88 billion) were signed at the event.
