Geely-Backed Firm to Unveil World's First Low-Orbit Satellite Consumer Phone

Xingji Shidai Technology, set up by carmaker Geely Holding Group a year ago, plans to roll out the world’s first consumer cellphone that can directly connect with satellites in low orbit.

The new phone will provide full global telecoms coverage from deserts to deep seas and jungles, the Wuhan-based startup said in an article posted to its WeChat account yesterday, citing comments made by Chief Executive Wang Yong in a recent media interview.

Mobile phone networks cover no more than 21 percent of the world’s land surface, Wang said, but satellites can achieve full coverage, and low-orbit communication technologies can spark massive growth by addressing the coverage issue, he added.

The company’s technology will enable complete land coverage and multi-end connection with fifth-generation wireless networks, low-orbital satellite communications and near-field communications, according to Wang.

The first of many products Xingji Technology plans to release will go on sale as soon as next year, Wang revealed, hinting at the future integration of the Xingji cellphone, augmented reality glasses and smart cars.

Xingji Technology was established last September by Geely founder Li Shufu to further the automaker’s entry into the cellphone market. It bought a 79 percent stake in mobile phone brand Meizu in July.
