Foliday's Revenue More Than Doubles in First Nine Months as International Travel Picks Up
Revenue at Fosun Tourism Group, the Chinese owner of ClubMed and Thomas Cook, more than doubled in the first three quarters from the same period last year as its overseas tour operators experience a strong recovery as more countries lift travel restrictions following the Covid-19 pandemic.
Fosun Tourism, also known as Foliday, raked in revenue of CNY11.2 billion (USD155 billion) in the nine months ended Sept. 30, the unit of Chinese conglomerate Fosun International said yesterday.
As international travel recovers, ClubMed has done particularly well, with turnover surging two-and-a-half fold in the first three quarters from a year earlier to CNY9.1 billion (USD1.2 billion), the Shanghai-based firm said. Bookings are now back to 96 percent of their number in 2019 before the pandemic struck.
Paris-based ClubMed turned a profit in the first nine months unlike the same period last year, which has helped boost Foliday’s profit, it said, without going into further detail.
ThomasCook’s UK arm logged a more than four-fold leap in revenue to CNY1 billion (USD140 million) over the period, while ThomasCook China’s revenue increased at a more modest 5.1 percent to CNY280 million (USD39 million)
Domestic demand is improving in places where the novel coronavirus is well under control, Foliday said. The firm’s Atlantis Sanya Resort on the island getaway of Hainan saw revenue plunge 37 percent in the first nine months to CNY750 million (USD100 million). The province suffered a severe outbreak of Covid-19 earlier this year and around 75 percent of the revenue was generated during the three months when Hainan was Covid-free.
