Experts Share Suggestions for Shanghai’s Sustainable Development at World Cities Day 2022   2022-11-03

Experts and scholars have taken the floor during the forums and seminars on World Cities Day 2022 to share their suggestions about Shanghai’s sustainable development and experiences of urban governance.

Shanghai should strengthen its digital transformation and explore the application of new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, big data, and cloud computing, to improve urban quality and management capabilities, Yao Kai, director of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, said yesterday at the forum themed ‘People’s City.’

World Cities Day is the first international observance day designated by the UN with cities as its focus and the first designated by China’s government. It is widely recognized and supported by the international community. The theme of this year’s World Cities Day was ‘Act Local to Go Global.’

For a megacity like Shanghai, it is necessary to use its advantages as a coastal city to explore the best way for human society to achieve sustainable development with nature-based solutions, said Zhang Xincheng, president of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Compared with Tokyo and New York, which have ‘octopus-like’ rail transportation systems, Shanghai still has much to improve as a metropolis, according to Lu Ming, executive director of China Development Institute.

In heavily-populated cities such as Shanghai and Tokyo, land resources are limited, so public space must be finely developed. Hino Toshiyuki, chairman of Mitsui Fudosan (Shanghai) Consulting, used Tokyo’s business district Nihonbashi as an example at the China-Japan (Shanghai-Tokyo) Seminar on Refinement of Urban Management.

Nihonbashi transformed itself from a desolated land to a prosperous district in the past 30 years by building commercial complexes that embrace history and culture, attracting medical devices and life sciences industries, and focusing on environmental protection, Toshiyuki noted.
